Through My Eyes

With work in the Grove I haven't had time yet to work on the sculpture of Tara Drolma but I've  continued work on a new design for the frame loom!  Here I'm preparing the carvings on shed roll for gilding.  There are a lot of steps and lots of things to prepare. This first layer is a layer of glue that is painted on to fill the pores in the wood. The glue by itself is called " size". It is in the jar to the right.

Here we can see the peice coated with a white coating called " gesso". It's a mixture of the same glue as above but mixed with powdered calcium carbonate or "whiting". It is tricky to make properly but came out just fine! I'm also working on polishing the frame peices; the ones in the foreground have been lightly sanded to flatten the surface while the ones in the back have been already been polished!

Here I've applied layers of red clay mixed with the glue( or "bole" as it's called) on top of the gesso. We can see the remainder of the glue (top left jar) next to the gesso (top right),  the red bole clay ( lower right) and some yellow bole clay ( lower left) that I mixed to test. It's used more in carvings with deep undercuts and recesses to mask spots where the gilder has trouble applying the gold leaf. I've intentionally kept the carving simple of course to make it more durable. The small prepared peice of wood is another test peice used to test the gesso and clay to make sure they were properly mixed and will work.

The carving is  almost ready for gilding!  There have been a lot of preparation steps but things are going quite well! There's a lot more to add but as usual two as one we'll add to the notes later beautiful one!
