Through My Eyes
*
We're in our coracle on our way from Nakpak tso to the Hospital of Traditional Tibetan Medicine and the Dokar Dzong in Gyeltanteng! Our Footprint Tibet handbook indicates that the city is rapidly being rebuilt following an earthquake which struck in Lijang to the south east. Earthquakes are not uncommon in Tibet as the Himalayas are still rising fairly quickly in geologic terms. The Hospital of Tibetan Medicine is quite conspicuous though! We know something of the highly evolved field of Tibetan medicine although to truly understand it takes a lifetime of study! I thought I'd mention the practice of moxibustion. It involves the harvesting of herbs under very precise conditions among which include the practitioner's state of mind. Then they are dried, ground and mixed with charcoal to form the remedy. This can be burned just above the skin, on it wrapped in paper, or even directly on the skin itself. The skin is not harmed however receiving at most small blisters. It is similar to a technique used in Chinese medicine but unlike the Chinese system the specific points are not arranged in meridians or lines over the surface of the body but are simply at certain important spots. Our Footprint Tibet handbook indicates that the assembly hall of Dokar Dzong is now being rebuilt and has images of many figures we know among them Yeshe Tsogyel Padmasambhava, Avalokiteshvara, Shakyamuni Buddha and Tara Dolma in her white and green forms. It also has wooden bowls made from azalea wood, ornaments made of silver, and embroidered covers which the Tibetans of Gyeltangteng create for sale. There's a lot more to add but as usual two as one we'll add to the notes later beautiful one!
