" Protection can be viewed as a type of preemptive shamanism. Protection is usually invoked when a person or place is likely to be attacked either spiritually or physically. Protection from physical dangers is necessary when a person is traveling or being exposed to epidemic disease, war, or the risk of being the victim of a crime. A shaman invokes protection from spiritual forces for a person who is especially vulnerable, such as a child, or when a person has a known enemy that may be capable of having spiritual forces invoked to bring harm. Throughout the world, unfortunately, there are unethical spiritual practicioners who will use their abilities to channel spiritual energy for destructive purposes.

Invocation for spiritual protection is similar to that for physical protection; remember, the spiritual world mirrors and influences the physical world. For general protection a shaman can invoke the helper spirits as well as some of the more powerful entities such as the Tenger and Zayaans to augment the power of the protection. In other cases you may create an ongon or talisman to give to the person for whom protection is being invoked so that they can keep it on their person as a reminder of the spirit that has been invoked specifically for the purpose of protection. Creating an ongon for protection and imbuing it with a spirit for that purpose will keep the protection strong for as long as the spirit occupies the ongon. Ongons are especially good for protection during travel and exposure to physical danger. Ongons to protect cars from accidents and theft are common in Mongolia and Siberia. They are easy to make and quite effective.

You may, of course, create strong protection for yourself when you feel endangered. When you are exposed to contagious illness, imagine your spirits creating an impenetrable barrier around you in order to repel infection. If you leave a house,car, or other valuable item unattended, call down spiritual protection on it with the intention of creating fear and confusion in potential thieves so that they are discouraged from stealing. When you go alone to a dangerous place,visualize your helper spirits in a frightening and warlike aspect so that they will create fear in any potential attackers."

( In the Buryat tradition the effect of forces in the spiritual world is acknowledged as those in the physical one! Zayaans are upper world spirits, often the reincarnations of former shamans. ) I promise to add more tomorrow...

( Tahshi Deleh, gentle beautiful one! Kehrahng kusu debo yinpeh? I got a lot more done on the outside of the studio, got most of the repairs started, and continued clearing more space by your table. It's going quite well! I scythed mulch and brought more up to the Grove after that. The night sounds are quieter now but it was beautiful up there. It's really late now so I'll add our wildflowers and then rest.

And so, as always we'll continue two as one on to tomorrow
