" The use of stones with magical power is widespread in Mongolian and Siberian shamanism. The three kinds of power stones are the meteorite, the quartz crystal point, and the zadai. All three are believed to be buumal-that is, sent down from the sky for use by shamans . Therefore ( with the exception of the quartz crystal point), what the actual mineral a buumal stone is made of is less important than the fact that as buumal it will have power perceptible by shamans. I should mention that ancient arrowheads and stone blades (not the imitations sold in souvenir shops) are believed to be buumal stones as well. They are highly prized by shamans and are sewn into the shaman costume to add to it's power.

A few years ago, when I was visiting the Khangalov Museum in Ulan-Ude, Siberia, I had an interesting experience with a buumal stone. A curator was showing me various ongons and other shamanic objects and she handed me a buumal stone wrapped in birch bark. Seemingly by accident (but the spirits probably made it happen), the rock fell out of its bark container into my palm. I saw it was a black stone with a white quartz vein in it that looked like a bolt of lightening. When it touched my hand, its energy was like an electric shock, but because my spirits liked it, it then felt warm and comfortable in my palm. I felt honored to handle such an old Buryat shamans' tool but had no idea then what it would do. That night when I fell asleep, I had many hours of visions about various ancient shaman rituals and woke myself up singing shaman songs I had never heard before. This is the special power of the bumal stones: they are believed to channel shamanic knowledge from the patron spirits of shamanic practice to shamans.

Meteorites are thought to be the carriers of new udha spirits into the world. If a non-shaman steeps a meteorite ( tektite) in liquor and then drinks the liquor, the udha spirit will enter a person through the liquid and the person will be able to become a true shaman. These powerful stones are a gift from the great patron spirits of shamans, Shargai Noyon Baabai, Buumal Saagan Tenger, and Buuluur Saagan Tenger. Meteorites aid shamans in communicating with the spirits of the heavens and have great magical powers for healing and increasing psychic abilities. I recommend that you obtain a piece of moldavite, a tektite, or another type of meteorite and commune with its buumal spirit."

( Tahshi Deleh, gentle beautiful one! Kehrahng kusu debo yinpeh? I spent the morning doing more work inside the studio and then went up to the grove to scythe and mulch some more. There are lots of praying mantis in the grass. Fortunately with the scythe I'm able to avoid injuring them. The apples are starting to come in; I brought some down so Mom and Kathy could try them. They are quite good tasting, a bit sour and tangy; I think you would really like them! I'll put this up and then add our wildflowers so we can rest.

And so, as always we'll continue two as one on to tomorrow
