Through My Eyes
Sunday January 4
( We read more of the spirits in the Buryat tradition!)
" Some suns souls are downright hostile. Usually the hostility is directed at someone who wronged the dead person. In cases of suns souls of people who died suddenly, prematurely, or of suicide, the hostility is due to jealousy of people who have fulfilled and happy lives. These unfriendly beings are known as chotgor, and they are the main cause of human illnesses ( when your read the description of the Mongolian-Siberian pantheon in appendix 2, you will notice that certain spirits are patrons of illnesses. This does not mean they cause the diseases; rather, it means they have control over them and can be invoked to stop illnesses and epidemics). Shamans, having the protection of their helper spirits, can interact with chotgor and send them back to the lower world, where they belong.
As mentioned above, suld souls settled in nature do not have the same negative effect on living human beings as suns souls do, but those who are sad or mentally unsettled can affect the emotional well-being of people around them. For example, have you ever been walking somewhere and suddenly felt a rush of sadness or dread and not know why? You may have had a fleeting contract with one of these entities.
When shamans die, their suld souls tend to be attracted to shamans who are still alive. Some of these become udha spirits, but others remain settled in nature and are still available as helpers for shamanic work. In Siberia there are many places that are recognized and revered as the dwelling places of the suld souls of great shamans.
As in the case of tenger, khans, and zayaans, nature spirits are found everywhere and have universal influence ( by that I mean that I can call for the assistance of a nature spirit from Siberia when I am in the United States or vice versa, if I have some knowledge of the spirit and some experience working with it). Thus, it is important to interact with the nature spirit of the place where you live or where you are visiting to do shamanic work. For example, one of my teachers told me when I went to do shamanic work in the Appalachian Mountains that I should not only invoke the spirits of the Sayan Mountains who are the patrons of my shamanic lineage but also know the spirits of the mountains where I was working and invoke the spirits of the forests and rivers of the region in which I was born."
