Through My Eyes

Saturday February 4

(We continue listening to the Dalai Lama as he tells of compassion, world peace, and happiness in My Tibet  written by he and Galen Rowell!)

" According to my own experience, the most effective source of happiness is simply sincere motivation. The ultimate destroyer of peace is anger and hatred. That's clear. The common definition of an enemy is a person who may harm one's self or one's friend or one's belongings. We consider that person to be our enemy because our friends and our belongings are what we judge to be the source of our happiness. Therefore, the enemy is really the forces that might harm the source of one's happiness.
If we look more closely, we see that our friends and our belongings are no doubt one of the sources of our happiness, but certainly not the sole source. Sometimes we suffer very much because of our belongings and our friends. Even our brothers and sisters may create a lot of suffering and pain for us. I believe that calmness and tranquility are the real source of happiness and peace of mind. Even without a friend, you may, inside yourself, have peace of mind. In fact, even when you are surrounded by your best friends with all the best material things and gadgets inside the finest possible home, you may not feel happy. Happiness comes from mental peace.
If we look for the destroyer of mental peace, we will find that it is usually an internal enemy. The external nuclear weapon will not disturb your mental peace if you use the proper technique or energy to keep your mind at peace. Internal peace of mind can be so steady, clear, and faultless that the external cannot destroy it. "

( The source of happiness! I promise to add more tomorrow...)
