Through My Eyes
Saturday March 11
(We continue listening to the Dalai Lama as he tells of compassion, world peace, and happiness in My Tibet written by he and Galen Rowell!)
" In our case, when we think of our experience of the last forty years, since the Chinese invasion, and particularly of those years immediately after 1959, we remember that some of Tibet's closest friends very sadly and confidently expressed that Tibet was gone. There was no hope. Now we know that Tibet has not died. From ashes and ruins it is slowly rising. Would the Chinese consider the Tibetan question to be so sensitive if old Tibet were dead?
When we looked from a distance, the Tibetan situation doesn't seem nearly so hopeless. If we compare the strong force of China and the weak position of Tibet- only six million Tibetans and one thousand million Chinese- it's clear why the outside world wants to be good friends with China: for practical reasons, for reasons of power, but not for true friendship. Because of political sympathy for China, it has been very difficult for governments of major powers to support Tibet. This is reality, but behind this reality the Tibetan issue lives on. Not only is it alive, but also it gains more and more strength. Time is an important factor. Back in the sixties and seventies much of the outside world believed the propaganda that the Chinese had done something good for Tibet by introducing the communist system. But the Chinese have proven equally expert at discrediting themselves. Our voice does not have to be so strong to overpower them, only strong enough to be heard after their last version of events discredits an earlier one."
( Tibet is very much alive! I promise to add more tomorrow...)
