The lotus is surrounded with mystery in the east and has always been a symbol of purity and  beauty. In Egypt, gods and goddesses are depicted holding lotuses, and the first being  was believed to step forth from the heart of a lotus in the Nile. Like the arrowleaf or Wapatoo it has  provided  sustenance to native peoples and  great medicinal value as well.  Although I don't believe it grows in Tibet ( it can only grow up to 1600 meters or about 5200 feet ) it is an important symbol of the Buddhist tradition because  the bright, pure flower  is able to rise up  from the mud. I promise to add more tomorrow...
