First Violet

Far I went

to work with others

through a land where

winter had not quite left

through storm  darkened sky

( our hearts as one

our vision shared)

Much seen,

much learned,

some to be left

incomprehensible,

wondrous things

high sharp mountains,

sea swept pools,

enormous trees

and the inner depths

of the  mind

then I came back.

To light glinting up

from the flowing stream

birds arriving to clamor on trees

first new leaves to the sky appeared

green grass begun above wet earth

Canada geese had built their nest

 and apricots  begun to bloom.

But it was not as it could be

a warm  sad emptiness

I went forlorn to the sacred place

with you in heart and mind

to speak with them of this

to beseech and remonstrate.

But then today

upon the path

A single glimpse

and hope raised bright again

As  first violet grows

from  hard cool ground

A butterfly of the earth,

slight beauty of the sun

Determined beautiful one appears

and I know that I've returned

from there to the place

of home.
