( We continue reading of mirrors and then of musical instruments.)

" In the final phase of healing, a shaman may also place two or three mirrors along the body axis of the patient ( as the patient is lying down) and allow him to rest with the mirrors on for five to ten minutes. The mirrors will adjust and strengthen the energy flow in the spiritual body. In healing work, mirrors are cleansed afterward by washing them in alcohol, passing them over a juniper smudge nine times, or by holding them in sunlight.

Mirrors are also used for clairvoyance, much like crystal balls in European magical tradition. Even though they are called mirrors, they are not mirrors in a literal sense because they tend to be cloudy enough that you cannot see clearly in them. This same cloudiness, however, is helpful in visualization, and shamans can do readings with them. In inner Mongolia there is a divination technique in which and egg is placed on a mirror and the shaman watches which way the egg rolls off. In addition, a shaman can often see intrusions and illness in a person by looking at the reflection of the patient in the mirror.

Shamans use a great variety of musical instruments in their work, including bells, cymbals, the Tibetan tingsha, the Jew's harp, the two stringed morin huur (horsehead fiddle), the four-stringed Chinese violin, and the tobshuur, a ukelele-like two stringed instrument with a head carved like a swan. Musical instruments are referred to as huur. What is significant about them is not what they are but how the shaman relates to them and is able to produce the sounds that boost her toward the ecstatic state she needs to merge with the spirits." ( Tahshi, gentle beautiful one! Sarangel also mentioned the making of mirrors; we might try making these too if you would like. I spent the day writing your poem and working up in the Grove. My sister Kathy came up to inspect things. She doesn't come up to the Grove often, preferring to practice Tai Chi and Qigong down by the stream. Groundhog has now taken to raiding the apricots although he doesn't seem to have any interest in the foliage. This doesn't bother me much as there weren't many left anyway but I've left repellant ( and corn on the other side) to lessen his interest. A mulberry tree grows nearby and when it is big he will be more than happy to spend all his time there. Both groundhogs and birds like mulberries a great deal .So we'll plant more of them! I've gotten a lot more practiced at using the scythe so it is going faster although in some spots the grass is now quite tough so I have to sharpen the blade often. The persimmons by the stream did better than I had thought. We'll have to plant more in the Grove though as I suspect the raccoons will be gnarfing up most of these until they are producing a lot. I forgot to add our prayer flag to one of the pages yesterday so I've added it for today. I haven't had the chance to work on our lotus blossoms this weekend as I've been outside more but they are coming along rather well. I'm going to add our wildflowers now and then rest.

And so, as always we'll continue two as one on to tomorrow
