Through My Eyes

( We continue to read of magical weapons. )

"Shamans may have other types of full-size or miniature weapons for ritual use. The most common ones are bow and arrows, spears, and axes.  The miniature bow and arrow is quite common. In the story of Abai Geser, the hero used a "bow made from a twig and an arrow made from a splinter" In spiritual reality they became a giant bow and a black arrow that struck the demon Abarga Sesen with the force of lightening after Geser had spoken an invocation over the arrow.
In Manchu shamanism, which is derived from the Evenk tradition of Siberian shamanism, the shaman had a variety of miniature spears and axes that could be transformed to gigantic size in spiritual reality. These can be seen at the Manchu shamanist Temple of Heaven (Tian Tan) in  Beijing, and reproductions are available to buy- I use a Manchu bronze spear and axe in my work. When I went to the United States in 1998, my teacher gave me a protective amulet for my travels that was a miniature iron ax. The use of these miniature weapons is a reminder that in the Siberian shamanist tradition it is easy to change the size of things in the spiritual realm, making the small large and the large small.
As is shown in the following example, the shaman can obtain powerful results with simple objects. Just as the size of shamanic weapons can be changed, they can also be transformed-when Geser fought the monster Sherem Minaata, all of his weapons were unable to defeat the monster. He journeyed to the upper world to meet the goddess Manzaan Gurme Toodei, who gave him a stick. When he once more faced his enemy, the stick became a fearsome weapon that smashed Sherem Minaata to bits. In the same way, if you engage in battle with a hostile spirit, it is possible to use a stick to beat on it if no other ritual is available: with the proper invocations and merging with the spirits, any weapon will become a manifestation of the spirits power."
I promise to add more tomorrow...
