Through My Eyes

( We continue to read of shamanic work.)

" If people have fleeting psychic contact with a spirit, see harmless manifestations, or have milder cases of mental disorder or disease, the haunting entity is probably benign or confused. Knowing the general disposition of the spirit is important in figuring out how to deal with it.
If the haunting spirit is generally benign, you can send it fairly easily to the lower world and it will not give any further trouble. If it is a nature spirit that is cooperative, you can send it to another place in the middle world and it will not return once you have done ariulga. You do ariulga of a place by smudging with sacred smoke, then spraying the area lightly with ashaan. Strew the perimeter of the place (inside and out if it is the building) with salt; salt is known in many traditions as being effective for confining and repelling spirits.
If the haunting spirit is hostile, you will have to struggle with it and keep it under control until you either expel it or send it to the lower world. If you can see it, grab it and confine it in an ongon or have your helper spirits hold it ( you may also invoke the help of Erleg Khan, as described in the previous chapter). Many times, however, the spirit may try to hide or run away from you. In this case begin doing ariulga at the perimeter, starting with natural entrances and exits such as windows and doors. Smudge around the perimeter and then strew salt all the way around so that the spirit is confined within the place ad cannot run away. Continue to do ariulga with smudge and salt room by room, finishing each room by salting in front of the door. Soon you will reduce the space in which the spirit can wander. In my experience the spirit becomes more agitated, even knocking things over, as it becomes trapped. Once you have combined it to a small space, it will be easy to overcome the spirit and then you can either eject it or send it off to the lower world. In any case, it will be necessary to smudge one more time and spray the area with arshaan.
Ariulga is used in places for other purposes as well. When a place has been the site of murder, battle, rape, abuse, or another violent act causing suffering for humans or animals, the spiritual pollution of a place will lower the spiritual power and health of all things that live in and frequent it. The pollution is cleansed by smudging; spraying of arshaan; and the strewing of salt, sand, and seeds. Note that the amount of the substances being strewed does not have to be so excessive that it creates a mess or causes harm to plants. The strewing should be light but thorough."
( In the Buryat world the world of energy is as important as that of the more material world. The removing of haunting spirits is one aspect of working with energy! )  I promise to add more tomorrow...
